"When I watched Bruce working in 16 Blocks, I realized it's the kind of work he always dreamed of doing. He completely immersed himself in the character.

"I was a struggling stage actor when Richard cast me in Inside Moves. That was two years before I got St. Elsewhere, which is what really gave me a film and TV career.

"When I made that movie, I had no idea how little you have to do for film. John Savage understood that. I gave way too much. I was doing way too much."

"I turned all that around with Desperate Hours in 1990 and then I was the villain for years. After 16 Blocks, in which I play a real nasty guy, I'd better start playing a few priests for a while."

Thank You For Not Smoking, which marks the feature film directing debut of Ivan Reitman's 28-year-old son Jason Reitman, pokes fun at Washington lobbyists, the tobacco industry and the media.

The supporting cast includes Maria Bello, Sam Elliot, William H. Macy, Robert Duvall, Rob Lowe, Dennis Miller and Katie Holmes, who plays a journalist Eckhart seduces.

When it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2005, Thank You For Smoking featured a sex scene between Eckhart and Holmes, as well as nudity from Holmes.

It's questionable whether Cruise had as much fun watching it, but the film's distributor, For Searchlight Films, is sticking with the projectionist's error explanation for the Sundance fiasco.

"You spend weeks covered in blood running around, screaming. There's a kind of camaraderie that develops on the set that feels a bit like being at camp, playing like kids again," says Foster, whose films include Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Door in the Floor and Murder in Greenwich.

In Stay Alive, he and his friends discover the videogame they are playing is actually playing them and they will die in the same manner as their characters in the game.
