The Benton County Republican Central Committee is organizing the local "Jessica's Walk," a statewide volunteer walk at 10 a.m. Saturday to collect signatures for the Jessica's Law ballot initiative.

The Corvallis event begins at Republican Headquarters, 980 N.W. Circle Blvd., where petitions will be given out. Any individuals willing to pick up petitions and gather signatures are welcome, according to Stella Guenther, one of the local event organizers.

"I cannot imagine anyone not wanting this law to be passed," she said in a news release. "With the increasing number of incidents that are occurring, it only makes sense to increase the severity of the punishment."

Jessica's Law is the name of a 2005 Florida law designed to punish child sex predators harshly and reduce their ability to re-offend. The law is named after Jessica Lunsford, a young Florida girl allegedly raped and murdered by a previously convicted sex offender.
