Last night her heartbroken mum claimed he had been identified as an Aussie who had been pestering her daughter for a date - but then turned into a nightmare stalker.

Within hours of police issuing a new e-fit, Linda was on the streets handing out copies close to Sally Anne's old flat and the hairdressers where she worked.

Almost six months after the 18-year-old was knifed to death on her doorstep and sexually assaulted after a night out detectives yesterday issued the second e-fit, thought to be a better likeness.

It is based on a description given by a woman sexually assaulted by Sally Anne's killer in a phone box in July 2001. The two crimes were linked by DNA evidence.

But Linda, said: "I'm absolutely livid because the police have sat on this e-fit and within 25 minutes of me showing it to Sally Anne's ex-boss we've identified the man as an Australian stalker."

Previously she had criticised police and pleaded in the Mirror for the new e-fit to be released. She said: "Why has the wrong suspect been on the wanted poster for months?"

The first mugshot was based on a description given by a woman mugged 45 minutes before Sally Anne was killed last September 25. The two scenes are less than a third of a mile apart, however there is no DNA evidence to link them.

The new e-fit was drawn up by the 2001 victim who made "every effort" to remember him. She had been talking on the phone when he exposed himself, then performed a sex act and tried to force his way into the phone box before running off.

Earlier, Sally Anne's mum claimed police had ordered her to stop giving interviews as it was "messing up" the investigation. She said: "After the phone call I broke down crying thinking I had ruined the case."

But police said she had only been asked not to reveal certain "operational details" of the investigation. She added: "She has not ruined the case as it is quite clearly ongoing."
