Su made the remarks while attending a meeting of city and county police chiefs organized by the National Police Administration to coordinate law enforcement strategies and map out effective crime-fighting measures.
The premier took the opportunity to clarify the motivation behind his earlier pledge that he would resign and quit politics for good if the domestic crime rate does not drop within six months.
"The vow was by no means a gimmick for political grandstanding as critics have claimed, " Su said. "I have put my political career on the line to underscore my wholehearted support for all police personnel, including rank-and-file policemen, in their law enforcement operations or crime-fighting campaigns."
Noting that crime situations vary in different parts of Taiwan, Su said city and county police departments should come up with different strategies and tactics to maintain law and order and stamp out crime.
"Given the different actual crime situations, the 'medicine' and the 'dose of the medicine' needed for each city and county tend to be different. It's my hope that city and county police chiefs can play a leading role in the crime-fighting campaign in local communities," Su said, adding that the central government will throw its full support behind their operations.
Stressing that the new round of crime-fighting is aimed at cracking down on crimes that local people desperately want to be rid of, Su said each city and county police department should work out its priorities based on the unique crime situation it faces.
In addition to emphasizing the importance of information gathering, Su reminded all police staff of the importance of teamwork and organizational force in the crime-fighting campaign. He also urged local police chiefs to lend full support to frontline law enforcers to upgrade their morale and operational efficiency.
