WINDSOR -- An Ontario man who exposed women to the virus that causes AIDS faces a possible life sentence after pleading guilty yesterday to 15 counts of aggravated sexual assault.
To date, the trial had heard testimony from health-care workers. The plea marks the first time Leone had acknowledged having the virus that causes AIDS.
"I think that it's commendable (when) an accused person realizes what the right thing to do is and does it, rather than play the matter out as long as he can," he said.
In court, Leone quietly answered "yes" to each count as the charges were read aloud. An agreed statement of facts was also entered into the record.
Bradie predicted the trial would have carried on for months if his client had not struck a plea arrangement, bogged down in testimony over blood test results and other medical evidence.
"I think that one of the things that the Crown had to prove was that the tests that were taken from my client way back in 1997 were HIV-positive," he said. "I think that there were . . . hurdles to prove that."
